The Signs Are There

If you’re looking for direction as we head into winter, don’t worry — I’ll point you the right way. Quite literally, in fact. This month’s photo features a fine old signpost, standing proud at a crossroads on the moors, bravely doing its best to tell wanderers where to go — a job I can certainly relate to some days.
The photo itself was taken on November 25th — a sure sign(post) that it’s well worth heading out in winter. Even when the calendar says “stay indoors,” nature’s still out there putting on a quiet show for anyone willing to notice.
The signs are that many of us will spend more time indoors now — the lure of central heating, hot chocolate, and box sets is strong — but let me steer you towards a slightly different path. Out there, even on the coldest days, nature hasn’t gone anywhere. The light may be low, but it still finds a way to paint the edges of the landscape gold. The birds are still about, the wind still carries stories through the trees, and yes, you can still feel utterly alive — even when your nose is going numb.
Sometimes we just need a gentle nudge in the right direction (or a not-so-gentle one, depending on how persuasive your sofa is). Think of this photo as your personal motivational signpost — one that says, “This way to fresh air, small joys, and a clearer mind.”
Of course, if you’d rather follow a more well-marked route towards inspiration, you could always pick up a copy of my books. Consider that my most blatant attempt at self-signposting. They’re packed with the same mix of nature, humour, and small moments that remind you there’s beauty out there all year round — even when you have to squint through drizzle to find it.
So, as we navigate the darker months, take this as your cue to look up, look out, and follow the signs — especially the ones pointing you outdoors.
I hope this one helps you find your way this winter.
