Time to Talk Day takes place on Thursday 5th February, highlighted each year by Mind. It’s a gentle reminder of something many of us already know, but don’t always give ourselves permission to do.

Talking matters.

Not in a dramatic, problem-solving way every time. Often it’s quieter than that. A thought shared. A worry voiced. A sentence that’s been sitting in your head for a while finally allowed out. As the day approaches, it’s worth keeping an eye out for it and taking a moment to reflect on what talking, or listening might mean for you.

Over the years, I’ve noticed how often these conversations happen most naturally while walking. Side by side rather than face to face. No pressure to fill the silence. No need to explain yourself perfectly. Just movement, fresh air, and the space for thoughts to arrive and leave in their own time.

The countryside has a way of softening things. It slows the pace, grounds us in the present, and makes conversation feel less like an event and more like something human and ordinary. A path underfoot, birdsong in the background, and suddenly it feels easier to say what’s been hovering in the background of your mind.

For some, that might mean walking with a like-minded group regular, gentle meet-ups where conversation unfolds naturally if and when it wants to.
For others, it’s simply you and someone you trust, sharing a walk and letting the words come without expectation.

There’s no right way to talk. And no obligation to say anything at all.

Time to Talk Day isn’t about having the perfect conversation. It’s about opening the door, even slightly and recognising that talking, in whatever form it takes can be a strength.

Huge thanks to Mind for continuing to highlight such an important message, and for the work they do year-round to support mental wellbeing.

The Mindful Chat forum is open 24/7, offering a quiet, welcoming space for conversation at any time not just on awareness days. Whether you want to share a thought, ask a question, or simply sit with others in the space, you’re very welcome to join in whenever it feels right for you.
