Lud’s Church in the Peak District, with Mrs Lawns and my sister for scale

A Week in the Peak District: Dovedale Walks, Lud’s Church and Spring Wildlife

A week exploring the Peak District with gentle walks, Dovedale scenery, Lud’s Church, and plenty of wildlife moments along the way. From peaceful river reflections to powerful waterfalls, this trip shows you don’t need big miles to have an unforgettable adventure.

There’s something special about a week away in the Peak District. It’s never just about the miles walked, but the moments you stumble across along the way. This trip was full of them… from quiet village wanders to dramatic landscapes, wildlife encounters, and those little unexpected bonuses that stay with you long after you’ve headed home.

Day 1 – A Wonkey Welcome

Wonkey donkey greeting us on our village stroll in Hartington

Day 1353 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and we were greeted at the end of our walk, by this very lovely wonkey donkey, his friend too camera shy to join us 🤗🫏
What an amazing way to finish the day 🤗

After settling into the cottage, we headed out for a short evening stroll around the village. Nothing ambitious, just a chance to stretch the legs and take in the surroundings.

And just like that, the Peak District delivered. A simple walk, barely any effort, yet a moment that made the whole evening. A reminder straight away that you don’t need to go far to find something special.

Day 2 – It’s Not About the Distance

Day 1354 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and a day spent walking in the Peak District
Limestone scenery, riverside walks and lovely company. What a perfect day

We kept things local again, setting off straight from the cottage. It wasn’t a long walk by any means, but that never really matters.

The limestone scenery, the sound of the river, and just enjoying being out there together… that’s what it’s all about. Sometimes the best days are the simplest ones.

Day 3 – Dovedale Stepping Stones and a Dipper

Dipper spotted along the Dovedale stepping stones

Day 1355 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and a trip to the Peak District is never complete until you have seen a dipper along the rivers of Dovedale
This one certainly filled that brief!

A trip to Dovedale was on the cards, especially as my sister hadn’t seen the famous stepping stones before. It felt like one of those “must do” Peak District moments.

But as always, it’s not just about the landmark. Along the river, we were treated to a brilliant sighting of a dipper. If you know, you know… these little birds are always worth watching, and they never fail to make a walk feel extra special.

Day 4 – Little Details and Dad Jokes

Cobweb and bridleway sign spotted at end of walk along The Manifold Trail

Day 1356 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and I ‘spi der’ ‘sign’ for good luck, a few days after my horse(shoe) chestnut photo!
Just filling the world wide ‘web’ with some fun AND 1 or 2 dad jokes….

This one was all about the details.

Right at the end of the walk, we spotted a brilliant little scene… a spider perfectly positioned around a bridleway sign, with webs above and below. One of those moments that you almost walk past, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Credit to Mrs Lawns for spotting it. It’s one of the best parts of being out together so often… seeing the same things, noticing the same little quirks, and being completely in sync with it all.

Day 5 – The Magic of Lud’s Church

Dramatic limestone chasm at Lud’s Church

Day 1357 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and took ourselves to see Lud’s Church today
Never get bored of visiting such an amazing place as this

The warmest day of the year so far, and we headed to Lud’s Church, one of the most unique natural spots in the Peak District.

No matter how many times you visit, it still feels otherworldly. The temperature drops as you enter the chasm, the light changes, and everything just slows down.

It’s one of those places that always draws you back… and no doubt we’ll be returning again later in the year.

Day 6 – Calm Reflections in Dovedale

Calm reflections along the upper Dovedale river

Day 1358 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and a lovely moment of calm along the rushing waters of Dovedale today
Does anyone else just stand and watch river reflections when you see them then?

Another warm spring day, and another decision to stay close to base and explore more of Dovedale.

We headed to the upper end, choosing a quieter walking route to avoid the crowds where possible. Apart from a short stretch along the river, we managed it too.

And then came one of those quiet moments… just standing, watching the reflections in the water. No rush, no noise, just being there.

Day 7 – The Power of Peak District Waterfalls

Powerful waterfalls along one of our favourite dales in Lathkill Dale

Day 1359 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and yesterday you had calm reflections, it was the turn of the power of water today
Mesmerising watching it all tumble over the edge though 🤗
PS Happy spring equinox everyone

For our last full day, we returned to one of our favourite dales in the Peak District.

The contrast from the day before couldn’t have been clearer. Where there had been calm reflections, now there was power. Waterfalls in full flow, more water than we’ve ever seen there before, and that constant, mesmerising movement.

A perfect way to round off the final full day, and nicely timed with the spring equinox too.

Heading Home – A Perfect Sign Off at Chatsworth

Day 1360 of #IansDailyPhotoChallenge and finished our holiday (boo hoo) with an absolute belter today
This one most definitely says spring has arrived!

No one ever wants the last day to arrive, but we made the most of it with one final walk around Chatsworth.

A misty morning gave everything a completely different feel. Quiet, atmospheric, and a perfect way to reflect on the week.

And then, an unexpected bonus… a couple of lizards soaking up the early spring sun. One of those final little moments that just sums it all up.

A fantastic way to sign off the holiday.

Final Thoughts on Our Peak District Week

This week wasn’t about big miles or ticking off landmarks. It was about slowing down, staying local, and really taking in what was around us.

From donkeys to dippers, spiders to waterfalls, and calm reflections to roaring water… the Peak District delivered in every possible way.

If you’re planning a Peak District trip, this kind of slower, local exploring is something I’d highly recommend. There’s always something to see, even on the shortest walks, and often those are the moments that stay with you the longest.
