Over the next few days our temperatures are set to rise, and with that comes one of my favourite seasonal spectacles along local footpaths and hedgerows.
Cow parsley season.
For many people it is simply the white blur that appears everywhere in late spring and early summer. Something walked past without much thought as we head from one place to another.
But when you slow down and really look, cow parsley transforms into something far more fascinating.
On today’s dog walk I decided to pay closer attention to it and quickly realised just how much life was gathering around these delicate flowers. Beetles, flies, hoverflies, wasps, bees, and countless tiny insects were all making use of it in one way or another.
None of the photos here are meant to be rare wildlife records or carefully identified species lists. That is not really the point.
The point is observation.
The point is recognising that an ordinary hedgerow plant can suddenly become alive with movement and activity once the weather warms.
The point is slowing down enough to notice.
What I love most about cow parsley is that it rewards curiosity. Every few steps there is usually something new waiting to be discovered:
- a brightly coloured beetle tucked among the flowers
- a hoverfly warming itself in the sunshine
- a tiny wasp darting between blooms
- or a bee methodically working its way across the flower heads
Most people will walk straight past these scenes without ever realising they are there.
But once you start looking closely, you begin to see that nature is constantly putting on small performances all around us.
That is one of the reasons I enjoy my daily photo challenge so much. It encourages me to pay attention to familiar places and notice the subtle seasonal changes taking place around me.
Certain sightings become milestone markers each year:
the first butterflies,
the first orchids,
the first Brown-tail moth caterpillars,
and now the increasing insect life gathering on cow parsley as warmer weather arrives.
The beauty of this particular plant is that the story is only just beginning. As temperatures continue to rise over the coming weeks, these flower heads will become even busier and more diverse, offering endless opportunities for observation and photography.
And the best part?
You do not need to travel anywhere special to experience it.
A quiet footpath, a roadside verge, or a local hedgerow can reveal an extraordinary amount of life if we simply slow down and take the time to notice it.
So next time you walk past cow parsley, pause for a moment.
Look closer.
