Hints And TipsĀ

Has reading this got you interested, are you now wondering if you would be able to something like this yourself? The easy answer is you most definitely can!

I will try and offer upĀ  a few helpful hints and tips for you here, to make things a bit easier for you.

  • Firstly and most importantly pick a subject that you are enthusiastic and passionate about, my theme is nature but this doesn’t mean yours has to be. How about trains, cats, dogs, food and drink, clothing, art, etc. The list is almost endless.
  • It doesn’t have to be an every day photo like mine, if that is too daunting just go for a photo a week at the weekend maybe?
  • What will you be using to photograph things? Again I just use my phone to keep it simple, but use a fancy camera if you have one.
  • Can you encourage others to take part? One of my customers from our main business was intrigued seeing me take a photo in their garden in year 1, because of this they then set up their own photo challenge as a family. Each week they pick a theme for the next week, they then pick a winner at the end of the week and the winner picks the next theme. Great family involvement.
Be realistic!

This is a photo of a kinfisher I took, but not for my challenge. It isn’t often that I pick a bird for my day, normally it will be a larger species, not one like a kingfisher that zips along and is tricky capture.

Be honest, is it really good enough to use?

These are the sort of photos I take, but have no intention of using in my challenge. For me it is because I am thinking ahead to what it will look like in a book!

Pick a subject that won’t move much!

If you are just starting out and perhaps can’t go far or do much, why not pick a tree to record through the seasons. It is amazing the changes they go through and you might also get to know and learn about the wildlife living in it too.

Look for the quirky and humourous shots!

It may not be the style you are looking for, but I am always on the lookout for quirky and funny photos. Just like this earwig inside a bluebell flower, hence my alternative new names for them.

Keep things simple at the start

This photo was taken right at the start on day 3 of my challenge, when I had no idea where anything was going. Nothing special needed when taking the photo, but as it turns out this highlights one of the most important messages I like to get across while taking these photos. Be observant and keep your eyes peeled for all of the little things you will see on your travels.

Please note I will be sending books out from home and I am keen to reuse any packaging, so that deliveries can be a bit more sustainable. Apologies in advance if you wonder why your parcel may be in a 2nd hand wrapping.

Thank you.

Opening Hours

Because my book business isn’t my main focus for work and is hopefully a way of making a bit of extra money for my charities, any messages and orders I receive may get to me at funny times, so please be patient.

I will get back to you as soon as I can.
